What should you look out for if you have sensitive skin?

“Sensitive skin” isn't a medical diagnosis but an experience: it stings, feels tight, turns red and reacts badly to things. Here are a few pointers that can help you choose.

1. Shorter ingredient list, easier to pinpoint the problem

The more ingredients a product contains, the harder it is to find out what caused a reaction. That doesn't make a long list bad in itself — it just makes the detective work harder.

2. Fragrance is a common trigger

Perfume (in the INCI list: parfum or fragrance) is one of the most frequently mentioned sensitisers. If you're unsure, it's a good idea to start with a fragrance-free product.

It's worth trying a new product on the crook of your elbow first, and only then using it on your face.

3. Don't change everything at once

If you swap your facial cleanser, cream and soap all at the same time, it's hard to tell which one caused the change. Change one product at a time and give it time.

4. Texture matters too

Dry, tight skin enjoys richer, buttery textures; if your skin tends to get shiny, choose a lighter cream.

5. If it doesn't go away, see an expert

Cosmetics care for your skin; they don't cure. If the problem persists, itches or spreads, that's something for a dermatologist to examine. What we can help with is keeping your everyday routine gentle and simple.
